Assignments
Assignments are like contests, but are not judged. When taking your photos, it is important to write down your camera settings, the lighting conditions, how you set it up, and so on. The purpose of the assignments is to go outside of your comfort zone and try new things, so please submit only photos that you took purposely for the assignment.
Please use the contest submission recipe to submit photos anytime before the deadline.
Feburary 2012 - Night Shots
In the spirit of our recent outing to Upper Canada Village, this month's assignment is "Night Shots."
Head out when the sun is down (or some other creative method of your choosing) and see what interesting low light shots you can capture with your camera.
Some tips:
- find something that glows bright against the night back ground
- use a tripod & the timer to avoid camera shake
- use aperture priority setting and play around with a low ISO setting (80 - 200)
These are just a few examples. Look up some tips & play around with your camera settings to see what you can come up with.
Please have all photos submitted by midnight Jan 29th using the contest submission recipe.
Reminder: a participation award is drawn from the names of those that submit photos. You must be present at the February 1st meeting to claim the prize.
December 2011 - Around the World
Have you ever sat down with your family and friends to show them a slide show of your photos from a recent trip only to find them getting bored halfway through? And your photos were actually really good!
This month's assignment is a little different because we aren't asking you to take a new photo to practice a certain technique. Instead, we want to give you some practice choosing a small number of excellent photos from what is probably a large set.
The assignment is to choose your ten best photos from a trip you have taken somewhere in the world.
You will want to choose the very best photos and yet try to represent the overall essence of your trip (not easy to do with so few shots!).
It turns out that the best way to keep your audience engaged and leave the best possible impression of your photography skills is to limit the number of photos you show. That way you really are only showing the very best, and there's no way they can get bored.
Here's how to participate in this assignment:
- Choose ten photos from a single trip somewhere in the world that's not here (they can be as old or new as you want).
- Rename your photos so they are called Firstname_Lastname_1.jpg and so on (consider the order you want them shown in and number them appropriately).
- Resize your photos so they are 1024 pixels on the long edge and 72 pixels per inch.
- If you know how to add your photos to a zip archive, do so, and name it as Firstname_Lastname.zip
- Attach your photos or the zip file to an email with the subject Around the World Assignment.
- List the titles for each photo in order in the email.
- Send the email to contests@ngphotoclub.ca by December 1.
We'll put your photos into a slideshow to be shown at the December meeting.
